The 2013 sailing season opened with cool weather. With temps in the mid-60's during the day and mid-40's at night, its hard to believe that some folks were swimming in the Lake during Memorial Day last year. This year, the water temperature is 56. Brrrrrrrrr!
As Captain, it was my duty to travel to Hilton Head Island to partake of 5 days of golfing and eating with friends and clients. I arrived back in Dayton at 9pm Friday night and the First Mate was ready to make the trip north at 8am Saturday. A lot of work lay ahead for us to get Therapy ready.
We spent all day Saturday get things ready from the rigging, to the sails, to the bimini, to the dodger. Sunday brought more work with a rebuild of the head and the installation of a new stereo. This took most of our day but, luckily, we were able to get out of the marina. The skies were sunny and the temperature was warm but we had no wind. The first leg of our 2013 maiden voyage would be made with the help of our engine. With a gentle breeze forecasted to come from the east to north-east, we anchored off Burgundy Bay on Middle Bass Island.
Monday morning broke with 13 knot winds from the south-east and the sky darkening to the west. The radar confirmed my fears of a warm front approaching fast carrying rain. We skipped breakfast and pulled the anchor. On the bright side however, the wind provided good sailing averaging 5 knots as we sailed close-hauled back home. The rain cut our weekend short, but we got a lot accomplished. Hopefully, we'll be back next weekend.
