With a decent weather forecast, we decided to skip work on Friday and make a three day weekend of sailing. We arrived Friday only to find rain on Catawba Island. Here we go again.
Amanda, Joe and Eli, along with Joe's brother John, were here for the week vacationing in Joe's family cottage in Marblehead and came by to see us. With sailing rained out, we went to lunch at Mon Ami and later took Eli to Train-O-Rama to get him a daily train fix.
Saturday's weather was better and we motor sailed from Catawba to South Bass Island. Eli wanted to steer the boat by that obsession quickly passed when Grandpa refused to let him get carried away. Besides, he found that bouncing on the beds in the cabin was much more fun. The day's trip to the west side of South Bass Island however, proved to be too much for Eli and he slept the rest of the day.
With the crew disembarqed at Herl's, we made our way back to Middle Bass Island for a quiet evening on the Lake. The wind picked up nicely in the late afternoon as we cruised up the east side of South Bass, bringing us to Schoolhouse Bay by early evening. The weather forecast called for a freshening wind overnight, so we dropped the hook as close to land as possible. At 1am, we found that the weather service had underestimated their forecast. Like turning on a light switch, the wind went from a gentle breeze to a full gale. We thought the wind was going to rip the bimini right off the boat! For hours I laid awake, hoping the anchor would hold.
