Our wind scoop tries to cool Therapy's cabin.
Welcome to Ohio. If you don't like the weather, wait about 5 minutes. We wanted to get an early start to the Labor Day weekend because the weather forecast called for a strong cold front to come through the area on Monday... so we started for the Lake around noon on Friday. Cold front? I wish! It was 95 degrees and we were dying for a breath of cool air. Saturday wasn't any better as we watched the Buckeyes play their season opener at our favorite Buckeye Bar... Frosty's.
The southwesterly 10 knot wind which brought the heat and humidity to the area blew steady all day Friday and Saturday. As we prepared to leave PIB on Saturday afternoon, we ran into fellow Oakwood Rotarian, Larry Leese, who told us that we should consider staying on the ball since he thought thunderstorms were on the way. The NOAA forecast called for a 50% chance so we decided to stay put, taking a quick sail out to Rattlesnake Island and back instead.

First Mate Connie at the helm.
Friday and Saturday's arrival at PIB was memorable in that the First Mate handled all of the duties at the helm while the Captain manned the hook at the bow to grab the mooring ball. Twice she manuevered Therapy through the mooring field and brought it to a stop right next to ball C-3 without a hitch.
On Saturday night, Larry's thunderstorms arrived with lots of wind, rain and lightning. I was glad we stayed. Sunday morning brought a steady 20 knot breeze from the WSW still ahead of the cold front which was to arrive later that night. Not wanting to face the predicted 30 knot winds, we sailed back to Catawba with just our jib making 6 to 6.5 knots the whole way. The weekend started as summer but finished with fall. On Monday, after the passage of the cold front, our high temperature was only 63 degrees and with it the realization that our sailing season is quickly coming to an end.
